Register of Deeds

The Register of Deeds performs duties according to South Dakota codified law including but not limited to reviewing, recording, and indexing deeds, plats, mortgages, satisfactions, assignments, subordination agreements, easement agreements, covenants and restrictions, powers of attorney, etc.

Files several different types of liens, such as hospital liens, mechanics liens, county aid liens, court-appointed attorney liens, federal tax liens, unemployment compensation liens, etc. Issues marriage licenses and certified copies of birth, death, marriage certificates, and burial permits.

Collects all money from recording and filing fees, transfer fees, certified and copy fees, etc., and performs all balancing and accounting functions necessary in the performance of these duties.
